Lightning Blamed for Two Overnight House Fires

(April 27, 2016) Fire investigators say lightning caused two overnight house fires that happened less than seven minutes apart and resulted in more than a million dollars in total estimated damages. No one was seriously hurt.

Dispatch was alerted by residents about a fire at their two-story home in the 15200 block of Nottingham Lane at 10:28 p.m. The first fire units arrived at 10:35 p.m.

Four family members were home when fire broke out. The residents escaped with their four pets before firefighters arrived. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from the attic and began an offensive attack.

Frisco Fire sent four engines, an aerial ladder, an ambulance as well as the department’s Rescue, Light and Air, and Safety specialty units to battle the blaze. One man was treated for smoke inhalation; he refused transport. The fire was reported ‘under control’ at 10:49 p.m.

Within seven minutes of the first reported ‘house fire’, lightning sparked another two-story house fire in the 1500 block of Talley Lane. In that case, dispatchers received another 911 call from a resident at 10:35 p.m. Firefighters arrived at 10:40 p.m. Once again, arriving crews found heavy fire coming from the home’s attic.

Frisco Fire sent two engines, an aerial ladder and an ambulance to the second scene. In this case, residents escaped safely. No one else was hurt. Firefighters reported the fire ‘under control’ at 1:53 a.m.

Both homes were approximately 4,500 square feet. In the first incident (Nottingham Lane), damages are estimated at $500,000, including $400,000 for the structure and $100,000 for contents. The second incident is considered a ‘total loss’ with damages estimated at $485,000 for the structure and $100,000 for the contents.
