One Mosquito Pool Tests 'Positive' for WNV; Frisco to Spray Saturday, Sunday Nights

(October 21, 2016) The City of Frisco will spray for mosquitoes October 22 and 23 after receiving confirmation one mosquito pool tested ‘positive’ for West Nile virus (WNV).

Weather permitting, on the first evening, spraying will start at 9 p.m. Saturday and continue through 4 a.m. Sunday. Spraying will resume at 9 p.m. Sunday (weather permitting) and continue through 4 a.m. Monday.

The city contractor will treat the following area by ground spraying:

Practicing prevention is the best way to 'fight the bite' as mosquito season continues through mid-November. When warmer temperatures persist, so do mosquitoes.

The City of Frisco supports four precautionary habits promoted by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

  • Use approved insect repellents: Use repellent every time you go outside. Approved repellents contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Follow label instructions.
  • Drain standing water: Drain water that collects in cans, tires, buckets, rain gutters, and saucers under potted plants. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.
  • Wear long sleeves, pants at dawn and dusk (when mosquitoes are most active).
  • Use air conditioning: Make sure doors and windows are screened – and those screens are intact.

In accordance with its plan, Frisco began testing for mosquitoes May 1.
