(March 28, 2012) Veterans looking for work -- or interested in making a career change -- are invited to attend the Veterans Career Fair on Wednesday, April 4. The inaugural ‘come and go’ event for veterans, only, will be held at the Frisco Discovery Center, 8004 North Dallas Parkway, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Proof of military service is required to participate.
Representatives from more than 30 companies and organizations will be on site at the job fair, hosted by the City of Frisco and the Mayor’s Veterans’ Advisory Committee. Fees and donations collected from participating companies will benefit the Frisco VFW Post 8273, which is working to establish the Veterans Walk of Honor in Frisco Commons Park.
“We want to do all we can to help our veterans find job opportunities,” said Mayor Maher Maso. “We owe our gratitude to the men and women who have served our country to protect our liberties. Here in Frisco, we also want to do our part to help introduce companies to this highly trained and dedicated pool of job candidates.”
Information released earlier this month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001 was 12.1 percent in 2011. The bureau also cites the jobless rate for all veterans was 8.3 percent last year.
“Veterans are encouraged to bring their resumes -- and plenty of them,” said Lee Myrben, Frisco Veterans Advisory Committee. “If you’re a veteran and you don’t have a resume, or your resume needs updating, we can help with that, too,” said Myrben, adding that representatives from the Texas Workforce Commission will be assisting veterans with creating resumes.
Worldlink, Inc. will also be providing tips on how to write cover letters, dress for success and do well during interviews.
Other participating companies and organizations include: A#1Air Inc., Acuity Training Systems, Inc., Allies in Service, American Legion, AT&T, Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation, BB&T, Cintas, Code Authority, Inc., Con-Way, Core Concept Communications, Dallas Air Motive, Dr. Options, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Ericsson, Extend Health, Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, Jet Pay Merchant, Kaplan College, Lennox International, Frisco ISD, Mario Sinacola & Sons, Medical Center of Plano, Statewide Remodeling, Technisource, Texas Instruments, ThyssennKrupp, University of Phoenix and VOLT.
The job fair is also supported by partnerships with PRISMA Staffing, the Frisco Economic Development Corporation, the Frisco Community Development Corporation and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce.
