Investigators suspect lightning to blame for two house fires

(May 30, 2012) Fire investigators suspect lightning caused two house fires which started before noon in Frisco. In both cases, no one was hurt.  Total damages for both fires are estimated at approximately
$700,000 dollars.

At 11:22 a.m., Frisco firefighters were called to the 5900 block of Aberdeen Place.  Firefighters arrived approximately four minutes after being alerted to the fire.  Firefighters found flames and heavy smoke when they arrived.

Once firefighters ensured residents and neighbors were safe, firefighters executed a ‘defensive’ attack, utilizing two engines with aerial ladders.  The department’s Special Operations unit was also on the scene.   By 11:51 a.m., the fire was controlled.

In the Aberdeen Lane fire, investigators estimate damages at $350,000 for the structure and approximately $100,000 for contents.

At 11:59 a.m., Frisco firefighters were called to a two-story home in the 12000 block of Botanical Lane.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames and heavy smoke.  Firefighters say the fire started in the attic.  Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire by 1:29 p.m.

“Some of the residents were home when they suspected their home was hit by lightning. When they smelled smoke, they walked outside, so fortunately, no one was hurt,” Assistant Chief Lee Glover, Frisco Fire Department.

Firefighters estimate the damages to the Botanical Lane house at $200,000 dollars.  Contents are valued at approximately $50,000 dollars.

“Today’s weather made fire fighting challenging, but we managed to work fast, reduce the risk of fire spreading to neighboring homes and ensure the safety of the residents and their next-door neighbors,” said Chief Mack Borchardt.
