Pet Registration

Voluntary Pet Registration Program

Why was the program created?

Getting a lost pet home to its owner is important.  The more information that animal control officers have, the better chance we have of getting your pet home quicker.

If we have to impound an animal, it is taken to the shelter in McKinney. That means a drive for city employees and also a trip for you to pick up your pet.

How to participate

Check with your veterinarian.  Many are participating by providing the forms to register at the same time your pets are getting their rabies shots.

Benefits of pet registration

     - Animal control officers will be able to get your pet home faster.

     - Pet doesn't have to get transported to the shelter in McKinney.

     - You don't have to drive to McKinney to get your pet.

Common Questions

Q:  My dog is microchipped, so it is already registered.  Why would I need to register with the City?

A:  There are several different manufacturers of microchips.  Each has its own registry.  Although Animal Control staff can normally access these databases, it isn't a 100% guarantee.  By registering with the City we have your information no matter which chip your pet has.

Q:  Since the program is voluntary, why should I pay to sign up?

A:  Again, the most important reason is to speed up the reunion with your pet.  The McKinney Animal Shelter will reduce your fees if your pet happens to be impounded.

Q:  Are there any other incentives to register?

A:  We have numerous pet companies that have joined us as partners.  They are providing valuable coupons.  We feel that the money you will save by using the coupons on common pet needs will more than pay for the cost of registration.

Q:  What is the difference between the one or three year registration?

A:  The time frame is tied to what kind of rabies shots your pet is getting.  There is a one-year shot and a three-year shot.  The registration is tied to that shot.  You cannot register your pet for three years if you are only getting a one-year rabies shot.

Q:  Will I get reminders?

A:  Yes.  We will send you a reminder that it is time to renew your registration.  That also means it is time to renew the rabies shot.
